STRATEGIC PLANNING EVENING COMING UP
Please plan to come to give your personal input. This is an evening just for our site to give Springhill input.
Where are we? What successes have we made? Where would we like to be?

WHEN:    Wednesday, February 29th
WHERE:  Springhill Library
TIME:      *7:00pm
*childcare will be provided for children 4 and above. Please contact Caren Kline at carenkline@gmail.com to arrange so that you are able to attend if needed.

MATH NIGHTS FOR PARENTS COMING  ...As I've mentioned before, our wonderful district math coaches, Andy Schipper and Mallika Scott, provide powerful training for our teachers, extending their expertise. Naturally this translates to even better learning for students. As you may know, Andy and Mallika have been offering Parent Ed nights. Another round of nights is coming up in March. I want to extend my personal invitation to you as these were highly regarded in the fall.

Please note some quotes from parents that attended:
* "Wonderful, engaging, informative, educational presentation! I'm really glad I attended, and hope to see more in the future. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to understand my child's experience at school, and to be more involved in his education."

* "It was a very eye-opening experience to learn different ways to arrive at the answers."

* "Some of these concepts are brand new to me. I now realize I am not very facile with subtraction. What I learned is that I will need to listen to my 8 year old to see where she is trying to go, not the other way around."

Please mark the dates and plan to come - I know you'll be glad you came:

K/1: Tuesday, March 6th at Stanley Library 6:30-8:00pm

2/3: Wednesday, March 14th at Stanley Library 6:30-8:00pm
4/5: Thursday, March 29th at Stanley Library 6:30-8:00pm

WELLNESS TIP The average American consumes 530 calories more per day now than he or she did in 1970, mostly due to increased portion sizes and the fact that we're sipping our calories in the form of sodas and sugary sports drinks. Bring back the 70's vibe with smaller servings and good old-fashioned water -- bell bottoms are optional.

THANK YOU FOR PAYING IT FORWARD!

*Strategic Planning Parents - Thank you the thoughtful parents that have been organizing to gather input for planning efforts prior to our input meeting. I'm encouraged by the efforts and energy around involvement and care for the progress of our school and district.

*Shay Kurtz for pre-planning for 5th grade play 2012-2013 - calling all interested incoming 5th grade parents. We're looking for interested coordinators? Touch in with Shay if you may have a knack and interest in this position. We're already planning for this great event for next year.

*Rhodora Del Rosario - terrific care of staff with treats during staff meetings. It really fuels them for our important time together. You're so important to us in the coordination of this!

*Kirstin Cortessis for support and help with communication of messages through room parents AND then Room Parents for your help in getting those messages out.

SPRINGHILL SCHOOL CELEBRATES READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY

"You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child."

Springhill School will celebrate Read Across America on Friday, March 2nd, Dr. Suess' birthday. The program's goal is to inspire our children to read through special events, guest readers sharing books, and reading resources.

Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books! Consider at home turning off the television that week, visit the Lafayette Library or share favorite books and or a special activity as a family. Each classroom will be celebrating in some special way on March 2nd. If you'd like to help, contact your child's teacher or Jill Tarkoff, at jtarkoff@lafsd.k12.ca.us, the Reading Specialist at Springhill.

Nothing drains the pleasure out of parenting faster than child misbehavior.  Drawing from the latest research and 40 years combined clinical experience, Clarissa Montanaro and Robin Hague offer practical tips for eliciting cooperation from children -- whether it's leaving the house for school, standing in line at the store, or driving with a car full of rambunctious kids.

"THANK YOU so much for your incredible presentation you did at our school.  It was fantastic and Clarissa was a wonderful speaker and so funny too.  We all loved it as you could tell; we couldn't stop asking questions.  It would be wonderful for our parent community to hear from you both for you are such a valuable resource...." - P.S., Parent, Lafayette Elementary School
